• An introduction to the central importance of language in everyday life through a study of the structure of language analysis. There will be opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding of a range of linguistic features through the stylistic analysis of individual texts as a method of identifying the defining features of varieties of language use and genres of text, e.g. Journalism, advertising, poetry, prose.

    An introduction to the evolving traditions and features of literature in English through exploring how writers shape meaning through the use of form, structure and language in a range of texts. These consist of the following:

    ·Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare (Arden)

    ·Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (Penguin Classic)

    ·Anthology of poetry (supplied by tutor)

    ·Short story (supplied by tutor)
